The Regional Co-ordinator will <br>
be responsible for the support <br>
and guidance of national<br>
initiatives promoting <br>
certification and the <br>
development of regional <br>
standards in the<br>
assigned region, as well as <br>
the implementation of FSC <br>
international standards at<br>
regional level.<br>
This position is at director <br>
level, and initially involves <br>
a one year assignment, after <br>
which<br>
a permanent position may be <br>
offered to the successful <br>
candidate.<br>
<br>
A. Formal Education<br>
The position requires of a <br>
professional with university <br>
degree in a relevant <br>
discipline<br>
such as forestry, business <br>
studies, social sciences, <br>
natural resource management,<br>
development or environmental <br>
sciences.<br>
An advanced degree in a <br>
relevant field is preferred.<br>
If formal education does not <br>
include forestry, demonstrable <br>
professional experience<br>
in forest management issues is <br>
required.<br>
B. Professional Experience and <br>
Special Qualifications<br>
At least five years in a <br>
relevant senior position in <br>
the region concerned.<br>
A successful track record in <br>
fundraising.<br>
At least three years <br>
experience of project <br>
management, budget handling,<br>
supervision of staff and <br>
consultants.<br>
Regional forestry and natural <br>
resource management knowledge.<br>
Experience in more than one of <br>
the countries of the region <br>
assigned.<br>
Ability to communicate orally <br>
and in writing in one or more <br>
local languages of the<br>
assigned region.<br>
Good spoken and written <br>

Good communication skills, <br>
particularly in relation to <br>
multiple stakeholder groups<br>
(e.g. NGOs, industry, <br>
government).<br>
Proven ability to work in a <br>
multicultural and <br>
multidisciplinary environment.<br>
Proven ability to work <br>
successfully as part of a <br>
team.<br>
Knowledge and experience of <br>
participatory decision-making <br>
and collaborative<br>
problem solving preferred. |

A. Strategic tasks<br>
Actively fundraise for the <br>
strengthening of the FSC <br>
Africa regional office and for<br>
National Initiatives in the <br>
region.<br>
Establishment of an FSC Africa <br>
regional office as funding <br>
permits.<br>
Collaboration in the design of <br>
general strategies for the <br>
development of standards<br>
and the promotion of national <br>
initiatives, in co-ordination <br>
with other regions and the<br>
FSC International Center, and <br>
responsibility for the <br>
implementation of planned and<br>
specific strategies within the <br>
region.<br>
Preparation of annual workplan <br>
and budget for the region, in <br>
co-ordination with other<br>
regional co-ordinators and the <br>
relevant FSC business units.<br>
Analysis of significant issues <br>
and developments at the <br>
national or regional level,<br>
including information <br>
regarding FSC certification <br>
bodies and certified forests.<br>
Actively participate in <br>
regional events to promote <br>
FSC, to conduct advocacy for <br>
FSC<br>
and to represent FSC mission <br>
and values in regional and <br>
international fora.<br>
Determine training and funding <br>
needs for National Initiatives <br>
in the assigned region.<br>
Collect information in <br>
assigned area of <br>
responsibility about new <br>
standards<br>
development processes in the <br>
region.<br>
Disseminate information <br>
regarding standards <br>
development, training, funding <br>
and<br>
strategic planning to FSC <br>
National Initiatives and other <br>
FSC Regional Offices..2<br>
B. Management tasks and <br>
activities<br>
Identification, support and <br>
development of FSC National <br>
Initiatives, such as contact<br>
persons and, working groups, <br>
as required for the <br>
development of national <br>
standards<br>
within the region.<br>
Build awareness in the region <br>
of the role of FSC standards <br>
and certification.<br>
Liaison with FSC members and <br>
regional initiatives and <br>
organisations in the forest<br>
stewardship sector, for <br>
advocacy, the promotion of <br>
FSC’s mission, dissemination <br>
of<br>
information about <br>
certification and increasing <br>
membership.<br>
Identification of training <br>
needs and provision of <br>
technical assistance for the<br>
development of standards and <br>
national initiatives within <br>
the region.<br>
Contribute to workshops and <br>
information courses as <br>
planned.<br>
Promote the FSC Trademarks in <br>
the region.<br>
Represent FSC and/or the <br>
Secretariat at meetings and to <br>
other organisations,<br>
according to established <br>
policies.<br>
Liaison with regional <br>
governmental organisations and <br>
other regional bodies.<br>
Provide technical information <br>
for the preparation of reports <br>
to donors, and prepare<br>
status reports and updates <br>
concerning projects being <br>
implemented in the region<br>
Control of all files related <br>
to National Initiatives in the <br>
region.<br>
Review of FSC membership <br>
applications from the region.<br>
Budgetary management of funds <br>
assigned to the region.<br>
Support control and approval <br>
of official FSC documents <br>
translated into local<br>
languages.<br>
Production of regular reports <br>
for the FSC Executive Director <br>
regarding developments<br>
and progress to meet <br>
identified targets within the <br>
region.<br>
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS<br>
The position is based in the <br>
region, with an initial <br>
training phase at the FSC<br>
Headquarters in Oaxaca, <br>
Mexico. Training location will <br>
change to the FSC<br>
International Centre in Bonn <br>
at the beginning of 2003.<br>
International travel up to 30% <br>
of time.<br>
